083 How To Find Out EXACTLY What Your Audience Wants With Surveys

By Leslie Samuel

Last week, I conducted a survey that was VERY telling. I must be honest and say that I was kinda surprised by the results.

Yes, I was surprised, but also VERY HAPPY. As a result of this survey, I have enough ideas to probably last me the next year.

Listen to This Episode

In this episode, I share what the results were and how I'm going to be changing what I do here at Become A Blogger.

Not only that, I also share some strategies that you can use for building surveys that allow you to find out EXACTLY what YOUR audience wants, and I challenge you to actually go out and do it.

So go ahead and listen to the episode, and then take action.

Some people just love being able to read along with interviews, or they might just prefer to skip the audio completely and just read through the transcript. Hey, if that’s what floats your boat, it is all good. Here’s the transcript just for you :)

How to Subscribe To The Show

  1. Thanks Leslie…you inspired me to sign up for SurveyDaddy..which I just did and now I need to focus and think what specific goal I wish my first survey to take….ummm ponder and food for thought. I like the “what do you struggle with the most” question as I feel that is good starting point. (my niche is yoga/self care tips for business mums/working mums, so it would be good to know exactly my readers struggle with) so I think I will do something along those lines. I will let you know how I get on. Thanks for inspiration and excellent do-able action steps..just what the Doctor ordered!

    1. That’s what I like to see – people taking action.

Awesome Ntathu. That’s what I’m talkin bout. Glad you were inspired. When you do post your survey, make sure to let us know. You can just leave your link in the comments section for us to check out.

      Keep it up!

  2. This was great! Thanks, for caring Leslie!
I know that I wouldn’t come to the blog if I don’t get a message. I am just too busy. It never occurred to me to just check. But when I get your message I check immediately.
I really struggle with how to word the landing page. How do we descibe what it is about and why they should trust it, in just a few sentences? And should that be on each article page? Marketing isnt my strongpoint!
    Thanks for everything! mary
?What the site is about, and why the need it.

    1. Thanks for the comment Mary. Now, by landing page, what exactly do you mean? Do you mean the main page of your blog, or a landing page where you’re selling a product or getting people to opt in? Coming up with a catchy title is definitely a challenging thing, but you get better with practice. So Keep on practicing, getting feedback, tweaking, and making it better. Next thing you know – you turn around and you’re a pro 😉

  3. Leslie, I think in most of the results I went against the norm. (lol) I was one who preferred the longer podcasts, that came to the blog on my own even without the email notifications, and that checked in here at least 3-5 times a week… lol. But I do believe that you made a great point on how valuable a survey is to finding out what your audience wants (the majority of your audience). Another great lesson from Leslie, and great tips that anyone of us can follow with our website. 🙂 One point of this that I recognized is in a lot of your advice…stay focused. Great episode, Leslie!

    1. Hahaa, hey – it’s great to know that there’s SOMEONE who likes to hear me talk for a long time, LOL.

Glad to know you found value in the content, and hope to continue to provide value for a VERY long time 😉

  4. Survey’s are GREAT! After listening to you podcast, i just completed one 🙂 Here’s the link if you’d like to see my little health coach interpretation of your ideas. Kept it short and sweet- only 4 questions. Oh and hey if there are any single women out there who just so happen to be reading this comment, i invite you to fill out the survey 🙂 Cause it’s for you!

    1. You see – this is why I love me some Rochelle Hanson – just TAKING ACTION. That’s what’s up. Keep up the awesome work. I ain’t no single woman, so I’ll refrain from filling out the survey 😉

    2. Hahaha! I’m juuuust seeing this! Guess i forgot to hit the “notify me” button. You are TOO FUNNYYYY.

  5. Ou I just checked and i’ve already gotten 13 survey responses! That’s just from sharing it ONCE – and it was on a friday evening too, not even a “prime time” spot lol. I’ll be sharing it again cause i’d like to try to get 100 responses from single women, whether they’re currently reading my blog or not.

    1. That’s awesome Rochelle. See, now you have actual data that you can use as you transition to your new blog. It’s great when you can get that kind of info to help you make decisions – just setting yourself up for success. Well – more success 😉

    2. Thanks for the encouragement Leslie!! I hope will be as successful as Interactive-Biology at some point. I really want to make an impact. And it all started with Wouldn’t have come this far without YOUR HELP!! THANK YOU LESLIIIIEEEEE!!!!! 🙂

    3. You are VERY much welcome. I personally hope The Single Status will be MUCH bigger than Interactive Biology at some point. You can do it. Btw, you need to do more interviews. You ROCK at it!

  6. Leslie, Great idea to get a survey going on the site to find out what people really want! I completed the survey right away after listening to this last week. only 6 easy questions long. I thought of the 100 or so readers I get a day I would get a great response. Almost a week later and I am thoroughly discouraged as only 2 people have completed my survey! 2! I’m not sure what else to do. I thought this survey would be key for me in figuring things out for my traffic, as I can’t seem to get much of an increase or steadiness in traffic.
So back to square one I guess 🙁

    1. Hi Holly,

You sound discouraged and I’m so excited for you. Why? Because you’re taking action. Ok, so only two people have completed your survey so far. No biggie. You have a survey that you can use as you grow your blog, and get more info to help you make the decisions you need to make.

So it’s not back to square one. This blogging thing takes work, and you’re putting in the work. You can send a message to your list letting them know about the survey and even share it on Social media. Don’t give up. Keep pressing on. I believe in you!

    1. That’s so great Candra. Thanks for taking action and getting your survey out there. That’s just awesome. I also like the topic of your blog. You should connect with Rochelle (see comment above). She’s starting a blog on a similar topic.

  7. yes, surveys are a good feedback and evaluation tool. SoGoSurvey is the best survey tool.
