131_how to take full advantage of podcasts_72

Over the last few years, I've completely fell in love with podcasts. Why? For a number of reasons:

  • I can listen to them almost anywhere
  • They keep me entertained
  • I can stay up to date on things that are happening in my areas of passion
  • I can learn actionable content to apply to different areas of my life

But there's something I've noticed – normal people aren't as into podcasts as I am. In fact, most of the people I speak to don't really understand how they work.

Those people are missing out, and I intend to fix that.

Here's the definition of Podcast from Wikipedia:

A podcast is a type of digital media consisting of an episodic series of audio, video, PDF, or ePub files subscribed to and downloaded through web syndication or streamed online to a computer or mobile device.

For me, I tend to focus on audio podcasts because of the ability to consume that content on the go with my busy schedule.

Some of the points I go into detail are the following:

  • How to find podcasts that are relevant to you
  • How to manage your podcast subscriptions
  • Taking advantage of show notes
  • Providing feedback to the podcast host
  • The importance of leaving reviews
  • How podcasts can give you access to influential people
  • A simple way to Take Action on what you learn from podcasts

So go ahead and listen to this episode and you just might fall in love with podcasts as much as I have.

What's currently in my playlist

Over the years, I've listened to MANY podcasts. However, I've recently cut down due to the fact that my schedule is pretty CRAZY. So, what's left in my Pocket Casts app? Here you go:

This Week In Tech
Leo Laporte

I listen to this to keep up to date about what's happening when it comes to technology. Things are moving so quickly that it's extremely difficult to keep up. Leo brings on experts and they discuss what's happening in this rapidly moving industry. Makes me feel like I know what's going on in the tech world. It's a beautiful thing

Podcast Answer Man
Cliff Ravenscraft

Cliff is a great friend and is the go-to guy for all things podcasting. However, his podcast is not just about podcasting. I consider it to be more about him sharing his entrepreneurial journey and providing encouragement for those of us who are also on that journey. Cliff is a part of my mastermind group.

The Smart Passive Income Podcast
Host: Pat Flynn

Another great friend who has accomplished a whole lot online. He's the kind of guy that you just gotta like – very transparent and very real. It's no wonder he has been able to grow such a massive following. He is also a part of my mastermind group. Great guy!

This is Your Life
Host: Michael Hyatt

This is a podcast all about intentional leadership. According to Michael, his goal is to “help you live with more passion, work with greater focus, and lead with extraordinary influence” and that's exactly what he does. He gives lots of practical steps. I'm currently working on a PhD in leadership so this podcast is of particular interest for me on this new journey.

The God Journey
Host: Wayne Jacobsen

It's no secret that I'm a Christian. That's something I'm pretty open about. I listen to this podcast because it literally challenges everything I believe about Christianity. Wayne doesn't go to a physical location called a church, but I consider him to be someone who is serious about his relationship with Christ and doing some amazing things.

Other Podcasts I recommend

I used to listen to many other podcasts. However, that takes a lot of time. Since I started back teaching, I told myself that I could choose ONE podcast in each category. Everything else had to go. There were a bunch that were on this list that I no longer listen to, but they are worth mentioning, so here goes:

Resources Mentioned

  • Pocket Casts – The Pod catcher I use on my smartphone for subscribing to and listening to podcasts
  • Free Blogging Videos – My free course on how to start a blog

Some people just love being able to read along with interviews, or they might just prefer to skip the audio completely and just read through the transcript. Hey, if that’s what floats your boat, it is all good. Here’s the transcript just for you :)

About The Podcast

Learning With Leslie

Learning With Leslie is a podcast dedicated to helping you build a business around a blog. No, not one of those blogs that will fall by the wayside when Google has a mood swing, but one that will thrive no matter what gets thrown at it.

I share tips and strategies that I’ve learnt building blogs since 2008 and interview experts who are knowledgable about various aspects of blogging so that we can learn from their experiences.

If you’re a blogger, thinking about becoming a blogger (pun intended) or are not even sure if blogging is right for you, go ahead and tune in to see what this blogging thing is all about.

How to Subscribe To The Show

  1. Love all those recommendations Leslie! I too have fallen in love with podcasts. I have been digesting some of your material lately and love your insights on blogging. Plus we believe a lot of the same principles, so that helps you 😉

Also, cannot wait to share your interview. Your interview is one of the most energetic ones yet!

  2. Good Stuff, I honestly don’t have the time to listen to podcasts like I used so I don’t listen to the ones that you posted, but in my early days putting them on my iPod and listening to them on my way to work, back when I had a day job, always kept me in focus
One thing I aways did which your readers may find helpful is I went to my local drug store (it’s actually one of those big chains who I won’t give a free plug here, not quite as quaint as the sound of a “local drug store”) and I bought a small pocket sized notepad that I kept in my back pocket. I always called it my 69 cent investment that was going to make me a million dollars. It is filled with notes in no special order. It has stuff I should look into to buy as far as equipment, software programs people use, article ideas, some phone numbers (some with no names next to them so if I haven’t called you back that’s why). I don’t use it anymore but it is still on my desk and it looks like it was in my back pocket and used for 12-18 months.
All day every day we are filled with ideas, we hear stuff in these podcast which could be game changers for us. Write it down and eventually you will look at it and some of these things are the difference makers..

    1. That’s actually a great idea. I got one of those little notebooks a few weeks back to write down ideas when they come to me. Haven’t been really consistent with it though.
